Photos from Noise Pop: Battlehooch, Nobunny, Exray’s and The Downer Party at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco

I’m no longer a Noise Pop virgin (I was going to say something about having my cherry Noise Popped, but it just sounded gross), having attended last night’s show at Bottom of the Hill featuring local bands The Downer Party, Exray’s (guys, you don’t need that apostrophe in there; just a heads up), Nobunny and Battlehooch. Here are a few highlights from the evening:

  • The Downer Party in general. I was impressed enough to go back to the merch area and plunk down $5 for a CD. Singer guitarist Sierra Frost was pretty endearing for someone I’m guessing wasn’t even born when I graduated high school. Gah, I’m getting old. Turns out she was roughly 7 years old when I was getting my high school diploma. Still old.
  • Exray’s’ (ugh, that apostrophe thing is killing me) Jon Bernson comparing us to a field of mushrooms.
  • The little girl, probably about 6-years-old, standing on her father’s shoulders to see the stage.
  • Justin Champlin of Nobunny after a male fan came up on stage and rubbed himself all over Champlin’s leather jacket before diving off the stage into the mosh pit: “If you guys come up here, just don’t step on my toe. I’ll explain later. Actually, don’t come up here … too much.”
  • Nobunny’s cover of Weird Al’s “Eat It.” I still know all the words, apparently.
  • Battlehooch guitarist AJ McKinley’s attempt to get everyone in the audience snapping both hands above their heads by asking them to do their best impression of Tevye from “Fiddler on the Roof.” (I was one of the five people in the audience who weren’t baffled by the request and shouted out, “TRADITION!”)
  • McKinley devoting a song to “the city and county of Detroit, Michigan.” (For future reference, Detroit is in Wayne County.)

Here is some incriminating photographic evidence of what went down:
