PHOTOS: Hate Factory, The Wrong Words, TIGERcat and Fake Your Own Death playing to benefit KUSF at The Uptown in Oakland

Other than the cause, what I really enjoyed about the Save KUSF benefit on Saturday at The Uptown Night Club in Oakland was how many eras were represented by the local bands raising funds to fight the radio station’s recent sale:

  • Fake Your Own Death had ’80s post-punk covered, with definite shades of Joy Division and early U2.
  • TIGERcat was all female-fronted ’90s electro-alternative rock, a la Garbage.
  • Guitarist Josh Miller of The Wrong Words had to play a solo set, since the rest of his band was M.I.A. for some reason, but the ’50s/’60s garage-rock vibe was still palpable.
  • Even ’30s/’40s Tin Pan Alley was represented by female ukulele duo Hate Factory, winner of the award for Least Appropriate Band Name of the Evening. (Also, the quote of the night belonged to the dude in the Machine Head T-shirt, who said of Hate Factory: “My brother lived in Hawaii. He’d fucking love this shit!”)

We had to leave before The Trophy Fire came on to see what decade(s) they were repping, but here are photos of the first four acts:

  1. Nice shots and great comments. I’d seen Hate Factory before and thery were in top form, both musically and as the cutest MCs ever. It was the first time I’d seen/heard both TIGERcat & Fake Your Own Death, but not the last for either band, who were both amazing. However, the highlight of the evening was a blistering-hot performance by Trophy Fire, who I’ve seen many times at various Bay Area venues. It’s too bad you had to leave before their set.
