Who’s Where? East Bay: Spots to hear live music in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda for Oct. 21-22

Grammy winner and Hawaiian music legend Dennis Kamakahi is among the musicians you probably won't be able to see at The Freight and Salvage tonight if you haven't bought tickets already. (via denniskamakahiproductions.webs.com)

You’re a music fan in the East Bay. All you need to know is who you can see play this weekend and where to see them. Who’s Where? is your weekly concert listing offering everything you want with nothing you don’t. For locations to all these venues, see the handy-dandy map at the bottom of the page. Got a venue/gig you don’t see listed here? Drop a line to bill [at] billchapin.net.

Working at newspapers taught me to never use the phrase “first annual.” By definition, an event has to happen more than once before it happens annually, and what guarantee is there that an inaugural event will be a success and will be back the following year? In the case of tonight’s “first annual” Berkeley Hawaiian Music Festival, I think it’s fairly safe to use the phrase. The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse has sold out of advance tickets for the hula hoopla. That’s the first time I’ve seen that happen at the venerable Berkeley folk venue since I started doing this listing; although, to be fair, I’ve only been doing this listing for a couple of months. There will be a limited number of standing-room-only tickets available at the door.

Also sold out: Portishead at the Greek Theater and rapper Kendrick Lamar at The New Parish.

So what can you still get tickets to this weekend? Steve Albini’s band, Shellac, is playing at The New Parish. As for my personal endorsement, may I direct your attention to Billy & Dolly, a project from members of San Francisco band The Monolith that focuses on simple pop songwriting. The duo is one-third of the indie-rock lineup on Saturday at The Starry Plough in Berkeley.

This week’s fine offering from the San Francisco Jazz Festival at the Paramount Theater is Balkan musician Goran Bregovic, whose madcap stylings were featured in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. Also in the world of music for film, the Munich Symphony Orchestra is performing Howard Shore’s epically awesome music from the Lord of the Rings trilogy at Oracle Arena.

Elsewhere on the list, you can find local “synthpunk” band Shame Shame, experimental music collective Eurostache, Celtic Woman harpist Órla Fallon, a high school jazz all-stars showdown, and something called Noothgrush.
