Going On Sale: The Avett Brothers, Peter Gabriel and other recently announced Bay Area concerts

That's Scott Avett on banjo and Seth Avett on guitar, for those of you keeping score. (via theavettbrothers.com)

The first time I saw The Avett Brothers, they were playing for about two dozen devoted fans on a rainy, weekday night at a mostly empty venue in downtown Detroit. What a difference five years makes. The North Carolina band (which currently consists of real-life brothers Seth and Scott plus three more honorary siblings) has kept touring and building a fan base by toning down some of its hardscrabble screamo-meets-bluegrass edge while doubling down on heart-on-sleeve romanticism. These days, the band is on a major label, coming off a Grammy performance and can apparently pull off a double-header at Oakland’s large-ish Fox Theatre. Not bad, boys.

That’s not even close to being the biggest concert announcement of the week. If you’re the sort of big spender with $200 to blow on a single ticket, you have three options: Peter Gabriel at UC Berkeley’s Greek Theatre, Sade with John Legend at Oracle Arena, and a reunited Neil Young and Stephen Stills resurrecting the old Buffalo Springfield name at the Fox. You know it’s a big week for Going On Sale when the power-ballad triple threat of Journey, Foreigner and Night Ranger doesn’t even make the Top 3 most expensive shows.

Is anything noteworthy happening on the west end of the Bay Bridge, you might ask? Great American Music Hall announced a curious little concert of mountain music from the Ozark-noir indie film “Winter’s Bone,” performed “live by the original composers,” which we’re assuming includes Tindersticks founding member Dickon Hinchliffe.

Unless otherwise stated, tickets are available through Ticketmaster with all their awesome convenience charges and whatnot.
