Going On Sale: Death Cab For Cutie, The Melvins uncut and other major Bay Area concert announcements

I don't care what you say, "Transatlanticism" is a great, in-no-way-wimpy album. (via deathcabforcutie.com)

Huh. The only arguably arena-sized group with tickets going on sale in the Bay Area this weekend is Death Cab for Cutie, and Seattle’s most precious not-so-indie-anymore rock band is purposefully scaling things down and playing a tour of  alleged “small room” venues that it can easily sell out. That would ostensibly include the show on June 9 at The Fillmore in San Francisco, although the band played there in 2008 at the height of “I Will Possess Your Heart” Mania (can anyone forget the unfortunate Gibbard Wigs fad?), so color me skeptical.

In other Seattle-centric news, grunge godfathers The Melvins are doing two dates at Great American Music Hall, but rather than back-to-back rundowns of greatest hits, the band is jumping on the “entire albums live” bandwagon. On May 16, the group will perform 1993’s Houdini, 1991’s Eggnog and 1992’s Lysol in their entirety, followed by 1994’s Stoner Witch and 1991’s Bullhead on May 17.

Also: My Morning Jacket at The Fox in Oakland and Earth, Wind & Fire at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Plus, tune in next week, when we’ll have news of such major acts as Peter Gabriel, Lyle Lovett and Eddie Vedder’s ukulele tour!
