Who’s Where? East Bay: Spots to hear live music in Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda for Oct. 14-15

Does anyone else pronounce India.Arie's name as "India dot Arie"? No? (via www.indiaarie.com)

You’re a music fan in the East Bay. All you need to know is who you can see play this weekend and where to see them. Who’s Where? is your weekly concert listing offering everything you want with nothing you don’t. For locations to all these venues, see the handy-dandy map at the bottom of the page. The San Francisco Jazz Festival continues to bring impressive names to the Paramount Theater, including neo-soul chanteuse and punctuation maverick Indie.Arie, who on Saturday presents the live version of her recent collaboration with Israeli composer Idan Raichel to Oakland’s art deco temple.

The other big show of the weekend is at the Fox Theater, where Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music will be sharing his stylish, sophisticated pop.

On the local level, I can recommend the punk ‘n’ funk of Damon & The Heathens—with all its theremin noise and tight horns—which I enjoyed at the Eat Real Fest a few weeks ago and you can enjoy Friday at Cafe Van Kleef. I’ve also been enjoying the honky-tonkin’ rock of Calafia, which is part of an extremely eclectic show Friday at The Stork Club. And from what little I’ve seen, fellow fans of The Avett Brothers will probably enjoy The Brothers Comatose‘s foot-stompin’ acoustic jamboree, and not just because both groups have “Brothers” in their names.

Brazil’s most popular female singer, Grammy-winner Daniela Mercury; the current incarnation of Cuba’s pre-eminent charanga ensemble, Orquesta Aragón; an evening of experimental klezmer music; and something called Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits.
