PHOTOS: Damon & The Heathens and some delectably greasy food at the Eat Real Fest in Jack London Square, 09.25.11

We caught just the last few hours of the third annual Eat Real Fest in Jack London Square this afternoon. Wrapping things up on the music stage was Oakland’s own punk ‘n’ funk ensemble, Damon & The Heathens. Hey, how come nobody ever told me that Damon (at least, I’m assuming the animated guy doing the vocals is the band’s namesake) plays a theremin? That’s kind of cool, even if he does just use it for woozy, electronic freak-out sound effects, a la Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I always say noise theremin is better than no theremin at all.

Anyway, the band sounded just a tight as a funk ‘n’ punk band with a four-piece horn section ought to, and Damon gave a enthused performance, even if he told the crowd that he’d have to tone down his usual schtick for a family event. The kids in the crowd loved it, though. They were bouncing all over the green area in front of the stage.

Oh, and the food was great, too, especially the Filipino sisig tacos from the Hapa SF food truck, which involved a delicious soy-lime marinade.
