Worthy of a Shout-Out: Pack it up, pack it in, help House of Pain begin reunion tour with show at The Fillmore in San Francisco

I’m re-naming this little feature, because the old name seemed a bit condescending toward the professionals covering music for actual publications in the Bay Area, and they do a decent enough job. That being said, there’s so much going on here in any given week, there’s bound to be some show that failed to get any publicity beyond a simple calendar listing, yet is Worthy of a Shout-Out. Well, here it is …

These guys = more rhymes than cops in a Dunkin' Donuts shop. (via Myspace)

Name a House of Pain song other than “Jump Around.”

Don’t worry. I can’t do it either. Doesn’t matter, because 19 years later, “Jump Around” will still serve your ass like John McEnroe. Put it on at a party, and people are guaranteed to start pogoing like idiots when the chorus rolls around. Some of the rhymes are dated and silly, but even with Sega references the song still has aged better than most similar hip-hop bluster from the era. (Exhibit A: “Mama Said Knock You Out.”)

Is one good song enough to justify attending an entire House of Pain concert? Maybe not for casual fans like myself, but the hip-hop trio’s show on Tuesday in San Francisco is significant for being the launch of the group’s 20th anniversary reunion tour. Everlast and Danny Boy are finally hitting the road with DJ Lethal, following a handful of successful shows the emcees did together last year.

The Boston native’s Irish roots are also sure to bring out some early St. Patrick’s Day revelers. You may take that as an endorsement or a warning.

Hey, you know what’s wrong with hip-hop videos nowadays? Too much bling, not enough bagpipe footage, punk!
