Going On Sale: Rush, PJ Harvey and other major Bay Area concerts

Iranian singer Dariush is so famous, he can apparently go by his first-name only, a la Cher. (via www.dariush2000.com)

When I started doing a weekly listing of concerts going on sale at my last job, I quickly learned to choose which shows to highlight based on ticket prices, because no matter how big a deal I think Stephen Kellogg at the Swedish American Hall is, a lot more people were going to be more excited about seeing Rush at the Sleep Train Pavilion. That’s how come they can charge $156. It’s called supply and demand, folks.

By that standard, one of the biggest concerts going on sale this weekend has to be Dariush and Faramarz Aslani at The Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino. If you’ve never heard of Dariush and Faramarz Aslani, it’s because you, like me, don’t keep abreast of Iranian pop music. All Music Guide tells me that Aslani was journalist who recorded “one of the greatest Iranian music hits” before the Islamic Revolution forced him to leave his homeland, and his music makes use of layered Spanish guitar and tributes to traditional Iranian literature. Dariush likewise left Iran after the revolution and has since recorded many political songs expressing a yearning to return. Both of them currently live in the U.S. and have large followings among their fellow exiles — some of whom evidently will be willing to shell out $111.50 for front-row seats.

Unless otherwise stated, tickets are available through Ticketmaster with all their awesome convenience charges and whatnot.
