This is\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/category\/overanalyzing-pop-culture\/song-duel\/\">SONG DUEL<\/a><\/em><em>!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>Smack! Crack! Hey, kids, it&#8217;s a digital vs. analogue showdown between a quintessential &#8217;80s synthpop ballad and an acoustic dirge that leant some gravitas to the alternative revolution.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-903\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/carsvsrem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-903\" title=\"carsvsrem\" src=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/carsvsrem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"211\" srcset=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/carsvsrem.jpg 625w, http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/carsvsrem-300x101.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(via mostly-vinyl.com\/magnetmagazine.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><strong>In this corner:<\/strong> &#8220;Drive,&#8221; the international New Wave hit by The Cars and the zenith of the Boston band&#8217;s career, achieved by trading in the guitar-driven power-pop of the group&#8217;s early hits for some full-on synth balladry, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_John_%22Mutt%22_Lange\" target=\"_blank\">Mutt Lange<\/a> production and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000459\/\" target=\"_blank\">Timothy Hutton<\/a>-directed video.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"390\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/HFZmRVjUJnY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed width=\"480\" height=\"390\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/HFZmRVjUJnY?version=3&amp;hl=en_US\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>And in this corner:<\/strong> &#8220;Drive,&#8221; the lead track and first single from <em>Automatic for the People,<\/em> R.E.M.&#8217;s haunting meditation on death and loss, bringing the Athens, Georgia, college-rock heroes into the &#8217;90s with acoustic guitar, accordion, tons of vocal reverb and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnpauljones.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\">John Paul Jones<\/a> string arrangement.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dailymotion.com\/embed\/video\/xv43o\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"327\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>FIGHT!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Precedence:<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Automatic for the People, <\/em>R.E.M.&#8217;s eighth studio album,\u00a0came out in 1992. <em>Heartbeat City, <\/em>The Cars&#8217; fifth studio album,\u00a0came out in 1984.\u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0The Cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chart performance:<\/strong>\u00a0At the time of these respective releases, both bands found themselves counted among the biggest mainstream rock acts on the planet.\u00a0&#8220;Drive&#8221; was <em>Automatic for the People<\/em>&#8216;s highest-charting single, but it reached only No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 (though it was a slightly bigger hit in the U.K.) The Cars&#8217; &#8220;Drive&#8221; was the band&#8217;s biggest hit and was a Top 10 single around the globe, including a peak at No. 3 on the U.S. chart.\u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0The Cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Critical mass:<\/strong>\u00a0Though critics haven&#8217;t always been thrilled with whatever output the bands have managed to produce in the last decade, both continue to be well regarded and considered highly influential. While\u00a0<em>Automatic for the People<\/em> is often acknowledged as R.E.M.&#8217;s finest moment and always makes <a href=\"http:\/\/pitchfork.com\/features\/staff-lists\/5923-top-100-albums-of-the-1990s\/6\/\" target=\"_blank\">just<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slantmagazine.com\/music\/feature\/best-albums-of-the-90s\/251\/page_10\" target=\"_blank\">about<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/rateyourmusic.com\/list\/unj\/spin_magazines_top_90_albums_of_the_90s\" target=\"_blank\">any<\/a> list of the best albums of the &#8217;90s, <em>Heartbeat City&#8217;s <\/em>merits are often overshadowed by the MTV-approved videos it spawned\u00a0and all the style-over-substance assumptions that come with that. \u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0R.E.M.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technique:<\/strong>\u00a0Neither &#8220;Drive&#8221; is very challenging vocally, and both Benjamin Orr and Michael Stipe turn in performances well suited to their respective songs&#8217; particular needs.\u00a0Whether it&#8217;s fair or not, though, it&#8217;s a lot harder to make out any technique through the slick sheen of The Cars&#8217; entry compared to the exposed rawness of R.E.M.&#8217;s.\u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0R.E.M.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad-assity:<\/strong>\u00a0Which is less bad-ass: a wash of mellow synths or accordion? Tough call, right? However, only one of these songs works as something that middle schoolers could conceivably slow-dance to, and it ain&#8217;t the one that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feelnumb.com\/?p=8664\" target=\"_blank\">Kurt Cobain was listening to before shooting himself<\/a>.\u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0R.E.M.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sexitude:<\/strong>\u00a0Only one of these songs&#8217; videos features<a href=\"http:\/\/sportsillustrated.cnn.com\/vault\/cover\/toc\/8890\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"> Sports Illustrated swim-suit cover model\u00a0Paulina Porizkova<\/a> sexily drawing on the wall.\u00a0<strong>Point:<\/strong>\u00a0The Cars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Redeeming social value:<\/strong>\u00a0In R.E.M.&#8217;s case, the title &#8220;Drive&#8221; allegedly refers to the band&#8217;s support of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Voter_Registration_Act_of_1993\" target=\"_blank\">Motor Voter Bill<\/a>.
