(See note <a href=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/2011\/06\/the-annotated-decemberists-no-2-shiny\/#footnote-10\">10<\/a>.)<a href=\"#refmark-1\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-2\" class=\"fn-text\">&#8220;A Dull and Witless Boy&#8221; is also the name of <a href=\"http:\/\/colinmeloy.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meloy&#8217;s Tumblr blog<\/a>.<a href=\"#refmark-2\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-3\" class=\"fn-text\">&#8220;<strong>vt.<\/strong> to soil, stain, tarnish, or besmirch, now esp. by disgracing.&#8221;<a href=\"#refmark-3\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-4\" class=\"fn-text\">Entomologists use these devices to kill insects without smashing their specimens. The simplest version is just a sealable glass container with a thin layer of plaster of Paris, which can absorb and slowly release insecticide. In this stanza, the narrator appears to be describing how he was unable to enjoy himself because he was troubled by a dream of being trapped with the song&#8217;s love interest in a killing jar, where they died in each other&#8217;s arms, although there is confusion about whether they were fighting or embracing.&#8221;<a href=\"#refmark-4\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-5\" class=\"fn-text\">The good folks over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.songmeanings.net\/songs\/view\/3530822107858504736\/\" target=\"_blank\">songmeanings.net<\/a> have all kinds of theories about the song&#8217;s key image. Some wrote that it implies the subject often has tears in her eyes. One poster assumed the narrator was describing the effects of certain drugs. Several others insist that the line refers to an involuntary, biological reaction that causes your eyes to &#8220;secret a fluid&#8221; whenever you&#8217;re attracted to someone. (&#8220;This is true,&#8221; one writes. &#8220;Look it up.&#8221; (Um, we did, and all we could find was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/dna\/h2g2\/A427277\" target=\"_blank\">evidence<\/a> that the rush of adrenaline tends to cause the eyes to dilate, which might help explain why we find things with big pupils cute.)) At any rate, it&#8217;s this blogger&#8217;s opinion that she simply has pretty eyes.<a href=\"#refmark-5\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-6\" class=\"fn-text\">&#8220;<strong>adj.<\/strong> brownish-yellow; tan.&#8221;<a href=\"#refmark-6\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-7\" class=\"fn-text\">According to Wikipedia,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.whirlin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sellner Manufacturing<\/a> of Faribault, Minnesota, has produced more than 1,000 of these nausea-inducing carnival rides since 1927. Since unpredictability and chaos theory govern the rider&#8217;s experience, it makes an especially apropos metaphor for the whirl of romance, dontchathink?<a href=\"#refmark-7\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-8\" class=\"fn-text\">This probably doesn&#8217;t mean she literally gets her <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tibia\" target=\"_blank\">tibias<\/a> broken. More likely, Meloy is utilizing an <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=kOU_AAAAYAAJ&amp;pg=PA405&amp;lpg=PA405&amp;dq=break+shins&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=I_LaLo-OZR&amp;sig=vsqIwAWsptfhA12ZdPC7vehJfSI&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=3_zlTbi1G7TPiAK26bnECQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=9&amp;ved=0CFEQ6AEwCDgU#v=onepage&amp;q=break%20shins&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">old slang term<\/a> for borrowing money.<a href=\"#refmark-8\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-9\" class=\"fn-text\">We&#8217;ll go ahead and infer that the narrator is describing carnival workers with fingers so dirty they&#8217;re as black as shoe polish.<a href=\"#refmark-9\">&uarr;<\/a><\/li>\n<li id=\"footnote-10\" class=\"fn-text\">A reference to William Butler Yeats&#8217; 1899 poem &#8220;Aedh Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven&#8221;:\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Had I the heavens\u2019 embroidered cloths,<br \/>\nEnwrought with golden and silver light,<br \/>\nThe blue and the dim and the dark cloths<br \/>\nOf night and light and the half light,<br \/>\nI would spread the cloths under your feet:<br \/>\nBut I, being poor, have only my dreams;<br \/>\nI have spread my dreams under your feet;<br \/>\nTread softly because you tread on my dreams.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Aedh is one of three archetypal personae (Yeats described them as &#8220;principles of the mind&#8221;) in the Irish poet&#8217;s\u00a0<em>The Wind Among the Reeds. <\/em>Adeh\u00a0is\u00a0a lovesick figure obsessed with a beautiful woman. He is often compared to the knight-at-arms in John Keats&#8217; &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/126\/55.html\" target=\"_blank\">La Bella Dame Sans Merci<\/a>,&#8221; who becomes sick and pale after being abandoned by a mysterious, bewitching lady.
