This is not meant to be a brag. I think what I&#8217;m trying to say is that the City of Oakland is full of great music just waiting to be discovered, and seeking it out is a rewarding listening experience that can easily take up two-fifths of your commute and\/or dishwashing time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a great diversity to the music, too, one that mirrors the region itself. The albums that follow hew close to my personal preferences\u2014we&#8217;re heavy on retro soul and guitar-driven pop-rock, surprise surprise\u2014but a brief perusal of Bandcamp&#8217;s Oakland location filter reveals a lot of chill hip-hop, not-chill metal, experimental ambient music, and unclassifiable weirdness. Everything I read about the Flint native, however, kept referring to her as a country singer, which threw me for a loop. &#8220;Are there <em>two<\/em> singers named Miko Marks out there?&#8221; I wondered. Of course there&#8217;s no reason a black singer from Oakland can&#8217;t make a one-off bouncy R&amp;B anthem while also positioning herself for a breakthrough into the country music industry (and it speaks to our culture&#8217;s insistence on keeping people in specific genre buckets that this seems at all odd).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward three years, and Marks has made impressive progress toward making that breakthrough. She toured with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackopry.com\/blackopryrevue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Black Opry Revue<\/a>. She was named a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmt.com\/topic\/next-women-of-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">CMT&#8217;s Next Women of Country Music Class of 2022<\/a>. And her third album in two years made <em>Rolling Stone&#8217;s <\/em>list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/best-country-americana-albums-2022-1234648516\/miko-marks-feel-like-going-home-1234648535\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The 25 Best Country and Americana Albums of 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Feel Like Going Home <\/em>doesn&#8217;t sound much like what&#8217;s getting airplay on country radio nowadays. It&#8217;s more like what was coming out of Muscle Shoals 50 years ago. And speaking of genre success despite preconceived demographic notions, singer Lech Wierzynski&nbsp;absolutely earns comparisons to the vocal stylings of classic R&amp;B singers like Sam Cooke and Sam &amp; Dave despite having been born in Warsaw, Poland. Yeah, I don\u2019t buy it either. But if you like melodic rock \u2019n\u2019 roll\u2014and I do, I really do\u2014this one is extremely solid. Ever since I came out from the rock I&#8217;d been under, I&#8217;ve noticed Toro y Moi popping up just about everywhere, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/pitchfork.com\/news\/pitchfork-music-festival-2022-lineup-and-dates-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Pitchfork Music Fest<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/ad\/bgIL\/hotels-com-boutique-stay?msg=song\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ads for hotels.com<\/a>. I told my brother-in-law the album sounds kinda \u201cBeck-ish&#8221;; he replied, \u201cAnd what exactly does Beck sound like?\u201d and I didn\u2019t have a great answer. As with Mr. Hanson&#8217;s work, trying to sort Toro y Moi into a single genre bucket is a futile effort. &#8220;Chillwave&#8221; seems to be the consensus, and while I can&#8217;t tell you what chillwave sounds like either, it&#8217;s true that <em>Mahal&#8217;s<\/em> mood is consistently chill. For me, that&#8217;s the larger story here. Diverse influences mix together to create genre-defying sounds, particularly laid-back grooves that conjure up carefree summer afternoons hanging with friends? That&#8217;s the Oakland sound in 2022.<br><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=2855467910\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/toroymoi.bandcamp.com\/album\/mahal\">MAHAL by Toro y Moi<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>And also, here are two great EPs\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. <em>Semillas<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ddlaonda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">DDLO<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An Oakland-based latin-music collective, DDLO employs plenty of cumbia and salsa rhythms and traditional instruments, but it mixes in electronic elements and a good dose of psychedelic rock. Like I said: diverse influences mixing together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=3957266885\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/transparent=true\/\" seamless=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ddlo.bandcamp.com\/album\/semillas\">Semillas by DDLO<\/a><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. <em>Nothing Matters Anymore<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/smiles666.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Smiles<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A small but satisfying portion of alt-rock that was recorded in 2016, wasn&#8217;t released until 2022, and sounds like a forgotten gem from 1993.
