(via www.wyeoakmusic.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Civilian,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wyeoakmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wye Oak<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">I discovered this Baltimore duo based on the excellent reviews for their 2009 album, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mlive.com\/citpat-pluggedin\/2009\/12\/albums_of_the_aughts_no_49_the.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Knot<\/a>,<span style=\"font-style: normal;\"> which quickly became one of my favorite releases of that year. The title track to the follow-up, &#8220;Civilian&#8221; would be right at home on that searing, melancholy LP. So while Wye Oak isn&#8217;t forging any new ground or drastically reinventing itself, I&#8217;m probably going to love the new album once it&#8217;s released on March 8. (I&#8217;ve never been one to seek out full album leaks before their release date \u2014 just the occasional individual track.)<!--more--><br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-style: normal;\">Wye Oak (named after the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wye_Oak\" target=\"_blank\">former state tree of Maryland<\/a>, of course) consists of Jenn Wasner, whose bewitching voice contrasts with her often volatile electric guitar, and Andy Stack, who is somehow able to play both keyboard and drums simultaneously despite having only two hands. The group is often characterized as &#8220;indie folk rock,&#8221; and I can hear some of the folk influences in Wasner&#8217;s guitar playing \u2014 lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs, for example \u2014 but mostly they play brooding, plugged-in indie rock, complete with gloomy lyrics.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>With &#8220;Civilian,&#8221; Wasner returns to the fertile gloom garden that is relationship drama, singing about a man that she clings to like her baby teeth and coming to terms with her need for intimacy: &#8220;Perfectly able to hold my own hand, but I still can&#8217;t kiss my own neck.&#8221; Then a surge of guitar noise breaches the song&#8217;s embankments and floods the last third of the track.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/i2VNG8yMI8w?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/i2VNG8yMI8w?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mergerecords.com\/audio\/wyeoak\/civilian\/civilian.mp3\">free download<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p>Wye Oak is currently on the road supporting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.decemberists.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Decemberists<\/a>.
