Not today! I&#8217;m leading off my roundup of vaguely planning-related news items with a pair of fecal matters. Hold your noses, everybody! Let&#8217;s dive in.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">1. Crap Map<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;San Francisco&#8217;s public defecation map highlights a shitty situation&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2014\/11\/21\/san-francisco-human-wasteland-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">engaget.com<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Is there anything that can&#8217;t be GIS&#8217;ed? <a href=\"http:\/\/jennz0r.github.io\/wasteland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Human Wasteland<\/a>, a website that geographically plots reports of human defecation submitted to San Francisco&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sf311.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">311<\/a> customer-service center, says the answer is &#8220;no.&#8221; In all seriousness, the map makes a pretty strong case for the need for more public toilets around the Civic Center to serve the homeless population.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">2. Great Taste, Less Sewage!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Why Dump Treated Wastewater When You Could Make Beer With It?&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/thesalt\/2015\/01\/28\/381920192\/why-dump-treated-wastewater-when-you-could-make-beer-with-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">npr.org<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oregon is considering bending its rules to allow a confederation of home brewers to use treated wastewater. If the experiment works\u2014and I&#8217;m betting folks at beer fests might be just drunk enough to give Poopy Porter a try\u2014it could be an important step toward getting the public over the psychological hurdle that prevents us from drinking (perfectly potable) recycled sewage.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">3. So You&#8217;d Prefer Weedy, Abandoned Lots?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;What to Do With a Dying Neighborhood&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2015\/01\/what-to-do-with-a-dying-neighborhood\/384475\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">theatlantic.com<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Atlantic<\/em> profiles one planner&#8217;s attempt to revitalize a suburban Atlanta subdivision that stalled out during the recession, with the city essentially operating as a developer and bringing some low-income housing to the neighborhood. Particularly telling is the graph showing the difference in travel time between summoning Uber and taking public transit. (Spoiler alert: It spells trouble for Muni.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">5. Bring on the Tube!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Mayor Lee gets on board with proposal for 2nd BART tube&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/bayarea\/article\/SF-mayor-backs-second-transbay-BART-tube-to-6020957.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sfgate.com<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At a meeting of the Alameda Planning Board a few months ago, the city planner was asked about the possibility of resurrecting streetcar service on the island. He replied that a BART line through the city and connected to San Francisco via a second transbay tube was a lot more feasible. I was skeptical, but dang if more and more people aren&#8217;t talking seriously about the prospect. Ed Lee is the latest. <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/hooKVstzbz0?t=1m22s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thumbs up, let&#8217;s do this<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">6. Sorry Your Commute Sucks. Will Road Pricing Make You Feel Any Better About It?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;What is the Bay Area\u2019s Plan for 21st Century Transportation?&#8221; [<a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/news\/2015\/01\/21\/what-is-the-bay-areas-plan-for-21st-century-transportation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">kqed.org<\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>KQED&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.kqed.org\/news\/series\/boomtown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boomtown<\/a> series, in response to a Silicon Valley commuter&#8217;s question asking when somebody is going to get serious and freakin&#8217; do something about Highway 85, gave Transform and MTC a platform to talk about TOD and variable-pricing toll lanes. Wait, Crocker? Where the heck is Crocker? Turns out it&#8217;s not in San Francisco at all. It&#8217;s in Daly City. Housing prices have so skyrocketed in trendy, more urban neighborhoods that people are, once again, being driven to the &#8216;burbs in search of affordability. (Inner &#8216;burbs, but still). And Redfin is seeing this type of thing across the board, not just in San Francisco.<br \/>\n<a name=\"raise-the-bar\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">8. Basically it lets you play God and see what the effect will be on a city&#8217;s demographics. Fun stuff!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">10.
