So I would never dare to say the following tracks are the best songs San Francisco and Oakland had to offer in 2011. All I know for sure is that these 10 tunes caught my ear enough to make me return to them again and again.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that two tracks by Bay Area acts\u2014&#8221;Stone Rollin'&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.raphaelsaadiq.com\/us\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Raphael Saadiq<\/a> and &#8220;Country Kids&#8221; by <a href=\"http:\/\/thedownerparty.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Downer Party<\/a>\u2014were so dang good that they made my overall <a href=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/2011\/12\/rankstravaganza-my-30-favorite-tracks-of-2011\/\" target=\"_blank\">Top 30 tracks of 2011<\/a>, regardless of geography. So in a just world, the would be at No. 1 and 2. Alas, the world is not just, and I needed those slots so I could write about Foreign Legion and Fake Your Own Death.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><strong>10. &#8220;The Ultimate,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/foreignlegion\" target=\"_blank\">Foreign Legion<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How dare emcees Prozack Turner and Marc Stretch and producer Grandpa J make a track with this much effortless cool? With enough soul to pass for the soundtrack to a gritty &#8217;70s urban crime drama, the beat is a big part of the attraction, but the Oakland-based rappers do their part by supplying plenty of good-natured humor.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RuFbiHriAxU\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>[free mp3 available via <a href=\"http:\/\/qualitycontrol.bandcamp.com\/track\/foreign-legion-the-ultimate\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp<\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. &#8220;Bombs Don&#8217;t Show Up,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FakeYourOwnDeath\" target=\"_blank\">Fake Your Own Death<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The San Francisco indie rock band went through some lineup changes since <a href=\"http:\/\/billchapin.net\/allthecitylights\/2011\/03\/photos-hate-factory-the-wrong-words-tigercat-and-fake-your-own-death-playing-to-benefit-kusf-at-the-uptown-in-oakland\/\" target=\"_blank\">I first heard it<\/a> in March, but it still sounds like every great &#8217;80s post-punk band at once set to a dance beat. Led by former <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/elephone\" target=\"_blank\">Elephone<\/a> guitarist Terry Ashkinos, the group is preparing to release a new EP in February.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 400px; height: 100px;\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=2781086831\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/deliradio.com\/bands\/download\/8454\" target=\"_blank\">free mp3<\/a> via <a href=\"http:\/\/deliradio.com\/fake-your-own-death#\" target=\"_blank\">DeliRadio<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>Catch Fake Your Own Death live on Dec. 31 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bottomofthehill.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bottom of the Hill <\/a>in San Francisco (<em>with The Velvet Teen and Happy Body Slow Brain) and on Jan. 20 at Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco (with Kill Moi)<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stubmatic.com\/bottomofthehill\/event\/6895\" target=\"_blank\">Click for New Year&#8217;s Eve tickets.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. &#8220;The Hours,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/foxtailsbrigade.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Foxtails Brigade<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Laura Weinbach&#8217;s neo-folk, chamber-pop project seems to belong to another era, when evenings were spent writing poetry and making music in the parlor. Utilizing little more than plucked classical guitar, mournful violin and a beguiling melody, this intimate song transports listeners there in less than two and a half minutes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 400px; height: 100px;\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=946615008\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. &#8220;I Did Crimes for You,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/deerhoofvsevil.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Deerhoof<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;d of course heard of Deerhoof before making my way across the country to the Bay Area, but I had to actually live here before I started paying proper attention to the venerable art-rock outfit. On the day that Art ran across this very blog, it was displaying Ben Folds Five&#8217;s self-titled debut and <em>Sail Away<\/em> by Randy Newman, which was very exciting for Art because the Oakland songwriter said those are two of his favorite albums. I can hear the influences of both on this piano-driven track, which employs a rather breezy melody to address a grim subject: the end of human civilization.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"position: relative; display: block; width: 400px; height: 100px;\" src=\"http:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/v=2\/track=886251114\/size=venti\/bgcol=FFFFFF\/linkcol=4285BB\/\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"400\" height=\"100\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>[free mp3 in exchange for an email address via <a href=\"http:\/\/artelliot.bandcamp.com\/track\/earth-abides\" target=\"_blank\">Bandcamp<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p><em>Catch Art Elliot live on Jan. 22 at <a href=\"http:\/\/viracochasf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Viracocha<\/a> in San Francisco.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. &#8220;Sea Salt,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/johnvanderslice.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Vanderslice<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The songwriter and San Francisco indie fixture tried something different for his latest album, leaving the comfort of his Mission District studio to record in Berkeley, employing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.magikmagik.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Magik*Magik Orchestra<\/a> to provide some string and horn flourishes, and doing it all in just three days. The result is some vibrant chamber pop.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G27UYMlwM-8\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>[<a href=\"http:\/\/johnvanderslice.com\/mp3sjv\/white-wilderness\/seasalt.mp3\">free mp3<\/a> available via <a href=\"http:\/\/johnvanderslice.com\/white-wilderness\" target=\"_blank\">johnvanderslice.com<\/a>]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. &#8220;All Too Human,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/waxidols\" target=\"_blank\">Wax Idols<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There&#8217;s really no shortage of local bands making this kind of music: psychedelic garage-rock recorded with a lo-fi aesthetic and bubblegum aspirations. It&#8217;s just that this female-fronted group from Oakland does it best.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/VXSsUALxmz4\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Catch Wax Idols live with Terry Malts on Dec. 31 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hemlocktavern.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hemlock Tavern<\/a> in San Francisco. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brownpapertickets.com\/event\/215477\" target=\"_blank\">Click for tickets.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. &#8220;Picture of Health,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/flavors.me\/kapowski\" target=\"_blank\">Kapowski<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oakland indie rock that acknowledges pop songwriting didn&#8217;t start with Lennon and McCartney (though they are influences, too). This track in particular has a jazzy, Tin Pan Alley vibe. The lyrics consist of singer Jesse Rimler recounting good times, but through a haze that makes it clear he&#8217;s haunted by the memories.
