Working at newspapers taught me to never use the phrase “first annual.” By definition, an event has to happen more than once before it happens annually, and what guarantee is there that an inaugural event will be a success and will be back the following year? In the case of tonight’s “first annual” Berkeley Hawaiian Music Festival,<\/strong> I think it’s fairly safe to use the phrase. The Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse has sold out of advance tickets for the hula hoopla. That’s the first time I’ve seen that happen at the venerable Berkeley folk venue since I started doing this listing; although, to be fair, I’ve only been doing this listing for a couple of months. There will be a limited number of standing-room-only tickets available at the door.<\/p>\n

Also sold out: Portishead<\/strong> at the Greek Theater and rapper Kendrick Lamar<\/strong> at The New Parish.<\/p>\n

So what can you still get tickets to this weekend? Steve Albini’s band, Shellac,<\/strong> is playing at The New Parish. As for my personal endorsement, may I direct your attention to Billy & Dolly,<\/strong> a project from members of San Francisco band The Monolith that focuses on simple pop songwriting. The duo is one-third of the indie-rock lineup on Saturday at The Starry Plough in Berkeley.<\/p>\n

This week’s fine offering from the San Francisco Jazz Festival at the Paramount Theater is Balkan musician Goran Bregovic,<\/strong> whose madcap stylings were featured in Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. <\/em>Also in the world of music for film, the Munich Symphony Orchestra is performing Howard Shore’s epically awesome music from the Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy<\/strong> at Oracle Arena.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on the list, you can find local “synthpunk” band Shame Shame,<\/strong>\u00a0experimental music collective Eurostache,<\/strong> Celtic Woman harpist \u00d3rla Fallon,<\/strong>\u00a0a high school jazz all-stars showdown, and something called Noothgrush.<\/strong><\/p>\n
