Go fig.<\/p>\n<p><strong><!--more-->10. &#8220;History Lesson,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motioncitysoundtrack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Motion City Soundtrack<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Minneapolis band melded its usual pop-punk song to some Celtic rock for this track, and it must have worked because it makes me want to swing around a pint and yell along, &#8220;It&#8217;s not my goddamn history!&#8221; And I don&#8217;t even know what that <em>means.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1Du3PuuEHYI?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/1Du3PuuEHYI?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. &#8220;Factory,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bandofhorses.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Band of Horses<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <del datetime=\"2011-01-09T23:22:27+00:00\">Seattle<\/del> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">South Carolina<\/span> indie band&#8217;s third album kicks off with a wall of woozy synths and guitars, contributing to a dream-like description of a man living in a messy hotel room. He&#8217;s eating out of vending machines and falling asleep with the TV on, perhaps having been kicked out of his home by an estranged wife or girlfriend. It helps that the saxes, which trade fluid solos then periodically combine in lockstep honking, are backed by a cool, garage-rock groove. In this case, Earle says he wrote it about fetching New Zealander <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/entertainment\/music\/4096886\/Musicians-Christchurch-blonde\" target=\"_blank\">he met while on tour in Australia<\/a>. In the song \u2014 a slice of mournful Memphis soul complete with some Stax-style horns \u2014 he&#8217;s been stood up on a rainy Friday night, but he stays until closing time just in case she comes walking in. Kelly Dodson)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Laugh all you want, but this viral video by the guys behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/show\/autotunethenews\" target=\"_blank\">Auto-Tune the News<\/a> re-wrote the rules of what a pop song could be. No longer does a songwriter have to labor over finding the perfect hook; a producer can simply take an sound clip and turn it into a jam that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.billboard.com\/news\/gregory-brothers-take-antoine-dodson-to-1004110352.story\" target=\"_blank\">cracks the Billboard Hot 100<\/a>. Not only that, but a horrific, real-life event like a sexual assault can be turned into a novelty song that brings amusement to millions, makes the perp a laughing stock and allows the victim to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/bed-intruder-singer-buys-house-27983\" target=\"_blank\">buy a new house<\/a>. The Toronto-based backing band for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brokensocialscene.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Broken Social Scene<\/a> member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts-crafts.ca\/jasoncollett\/index2.php\" target=\"_blank\">Jason Collett<\/a> struck out on their own with a debut LP full of songs sure to appeal to anyone else out there that enjoys Sloan and The New Pornographers. This tune is the best of the bunch, a slice of musical advice for a friend who can&#8217;t stop thinking about a girl who just makes him miserable.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/oc4qnM9rcVo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=57\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/oc4qnM9rcVo?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;start=57\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. &#8220;So Sleepy,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiona-apple.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fiona Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/jbrion\" target=\"_blank\">Jon Brion<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.punchbrothers.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Punch Brothers<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Punch Brothers, mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile&#8217;s new band, were all over the place this year \u2014 releasing a sophomore LP of progressive bluegrass, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=w59w_oiwQF8\" target=\"_blank\">backing Dierks Bentley<\/a> on his acoustic roots album, touring all over and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VrtIGHD3N-M\" target=\"_blank\">covering Radiohead<\/a> \u2014 but this was my favorite thing they did. Not to mention, hey, Fiona Apple is back in the recording studio with the producer who brings out her best quirks. They all collaborated on this song, their version of a composition by a bunch of fifth graders (hence the lyrics about Gummi Bears), written as part of a songwriting class offered by the nonprofit tutoring center\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.826la.org\/\">826LA<\/a>. I can hardly imagine how cool it must be for those kids to put this song on and say, &#8220;Yeah, I wrote that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2QNu3OaWolE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/2QNu3OaWolE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. &#8220;World Sick,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brokensocialscene.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Broken Social Scene<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hey, Broken Social Scene! We were just talking about you, and now here you are. The Canadian musical collective released its fourth album of lush indie rock this year, and nowhere is the pop sound so huge as the epic opening track. It sounds like every musician in Toronto is playing during the instrumental breaks on this song.<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Lb9WKJhqVWs?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"480\" height=\"385\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Lb9WKJhqVWs?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. &#8220;Lewis Takes Off His Shirt,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owenpalletteternal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Owen Pallett<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Who is Own Pallett? He&#8217;s the Canadian composer who arranges string parts for Arcade Fire and released two albums under the name Final Fantasy before <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Square_Enix\" target=\"_blank\">Square Enix<\/a> told him to cut it out. Who is Lewis? He is the &#8220;young, ultra-violent farmer&#8221; from the fantasy world of Heartland who serves as the protagonist of Pallett&#8217;s third album, a series of musical monologues featuring Lewis arguing with his creator, whose name, tellingly, is Owen. Why is he taking off his shirt? Don&#8217;t worry about it.
